Late Fall
Egg Tempera
21 x 31 inches

The artist’s only daughter had just gotten married in late October just as the artist and his wife had done. In the months leading up to the event his wife led a hectic schedule and now that it was over things began to calm down. In the next week she collected this basket of cones from under the white pine to the east of their house, the same tree and cones featured in “Snow Cones”. This is also the white pine where the goldfinches, his wife’s favorite bird, have nested for the past three years. The artist has visited the subject of pine cones on various occasions in such paintings as “Firestarters”, “ Windfalls” and the early drybrush “Woods”, among a handful of others. This gathering of the cones, however, reminded the artist of the gathering of the families at the wedding and the gathered cones, once placed into the basket, seemed to symbolize the artist’s close knit family who get together for numerous gatherings throughout the year especially in “Late Fall”.
